Augmented reality or virtual reality

There has been a lot of confusion between augmented reality and virtual reality, with several people claiming that the two are the same thing. That is a far-fetched argument considering how distinct both are, even as they continue getting more and more media attention. Everything points at a tremendous growth for both, but it is essential to draw a line where the difference lies.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (AR) is simply a version of reality enhanced by the use of technology to add more digital information on a given media. It is used in Smartphone and Tablet apps whereby the apps use the device camera to provide you with a glimpse of the real world in front of you, then include an extra layer of information which might be in the form of a text or image at the top. Ideally, AR enhances apps when used on mobile devices as the combination blends digital components into reality, but they can always be told apart with ease.

Augmented Reality has been embraced in modern technology, and currently, it is being used in so many ways. Among the primary uses of AR are displaying score overlays on tele sports games, photos on mobile devices, as well as pop-out 3D emails. Tech experts are also using the same technology to revolutionize holograms and commands activated through motion.

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated technology aimed at creating a simulated real-life environment. It works through getting the user to feel like they are experiencing the reality firsthand by totally manipulating both their vision and hearing. VR can only be attained by wearing a special headset that has been equipped with simulation technology. It is used mainly in two different ways;

  • To create and improve an imaginary reality purely for entertainment, gaming, and play. Examples include 3D movies and video and computer games.
  • To improve training for real-life scenarios through the simulation of reality where users can practice before experiencing real life treat.

Augmented Reality Vs. Virtual Reality :

Both augmented and virtual realities are opposite reflections of each in the other, with both technologies seeking to give the user a fulfilling accomplishment. Where augmented reality seeks to deliver virtual elements as a sheath to the real world, virtual reality offers a digital recreation of an imagined real life scenario.

Similarities :

1. Technology – They both make use of similar technology in terms of creating an enhanced experience.

2. Entertainment – They both magnify experiences that are hugely sought after in the entertainment scene.

Differences :

1. Purpose –Where virtual reality creates a computer-generated reality of its own, augmented reality works by adding virtual components such as graphics and images as an overlay for interacting with the real world.

2. Method of delivery –Where virtual reality is delivered through a headgear or hand-held control device for simulating the real world, augmented reality is utilized more in devices such as laptops, Smartphones, and tablets to alter the interaction and intersection of the real world and virtual components.

Can they work together?

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are not meant always to operate independently. Today they are often being used together for purposes of creating an even more captivating immersion. A good example where they’ve been used together is the haptic feedback, the sensation and vibration added to graphics interaction. It is commonly considered an augmentation, but it is primarily used in a virtual reality setting to bring about a more life-like experience through touch.
